The Cincinnati Reds and right-hander Hunter Greene reached an agreement on a six-year, $53 million contract on Tuesday.
Bringing the hardest-throwing starter in baseball to a team that previously had no guaranteed compensation beyond this season.
Greene, 23, made his debut last year while Cincinnati was still rebuilding. Starters Nick Lodolo and Graham Ashcraft were added.
Together with Greene, they have given some hope to a team that last entered the playoffs in 2013, discounting the COVID-shortened season.
Greene's contract begins this season and lasts two years, with a $21 million seventh-year club option that includes a $2 million buyout.
